Mattox plays a structured style – focusing on footwork, tracking, and moving into position quickly to beat the pass and get in front of the shot. With depth and positioning he takes away a shooter’s angles, and then remains on his feet as long as possible. His excellent hand-eye coordination allows him to make glove saves out in front of his body, and to redirect the puck with his blocker and stick. He communicates well with his team, he is developing the skill to play the puck both behind and in front of the net when the situation warrants it, and he enjoys taking a leadership role on and off the ice.
