Colorado Thunderbirds Name Scott Meyer Goaltending Director

Former Division I All-American and professional goaltender adds championship coaching experience and junior hockey leadership as the Thunderbirds prepare for the USA Hockey Development League.

DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Thunderbirds are proud to announce the hiring of Scott Meyer as Goaltending Director, strengthening the organization’s coaching staff and goaltender development pathway as it prepares to compete in the USA Hockey Development League (DL).

Meyer brings experience spanning youth development, junior hockey, NCAA Division I competition and professional hockey. His addition provides specialized leadership at a critical position, supporting the Thunderbirds’ commitment to developing players in Colorado and preparing them for junior and college hockey.

A graduate of St. Cloud State University with a degree in business management, Meyer earned NCAA Division I All-American honors, was a two-time All-WCHA selection and helped the Huskies capture their first WCHA Final Five championship in 2001. He went on to play three seasons professionally in the New York Rangers organization, competing with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack and ECHL’s Charlotte Checkers, earning ECHL All-Star recognition and dressing as a backup goaltender for the Rangers at the NHL level.

Following his playing career, Meyer coached in the USHL, helping the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders capture the Anderson Cup regular-season title and Clark Cup playoff championship in 2005. He later served as head coach, general manager and president of the NAHL’s Minnesota Magicians, gaining extensive experience in player development, evaluation, recruiting and organizational leadership.

“Scott’s addition strengthens an important part of the development environment we’re building as we enter the DL,” said Jordan Pietrus, President of Hockey Operations. “He has excelled as a goaltender and has been on the other side of the recruiting process as a junior hockey coach and general manager. That perspective will help our goalies develop while giving our families valuable guidance on what it takes to advance. We’re thrilled to add his experience and relationships to our staff.”

As Goaltending Director, Meyer will work with goaltenders and team coaches across the organization to establish a consistent approach to the position while addressing each player’s individual needs. His collaboration with the coaching staff will connect goaltender instruction with team practices, game performance and long-term development goals.

Meyer’s leadership will support the Thunderbirds’ broader pathway, from younger age groups through its 15U and 17U DL teams and its 18U program. His understanding of junior hockey evaluation and recruiting, along with his connections throughout the hockey community, will help players and families assess opportunities and prepare for the demands of the next level.

“Our goal is to connect the expertise across our staff so every player benefits,” Pietrus added. “Scott will be an important part of that collaboration, helping us provide our goaltenders with the coaching, feedback and direction they need to take their next steps.”

Meyer has also led training and development programs through Prime Sports Group, working with athletes from youth through college age. His addition reinforces the Thunderbirds’ investment in experienced leadership and a connected development pathway as the organization enters its next chapter in the DL.
